Traveling to India is, without a doubt, a life-changing experience for any traveler. No matter how many countries you’ve visited before, nothing can fully prepare you for the whirlwind of colors, smells, sounds, and contrasts that greets you the moment you land.
Before I start telling you about my adventure, I want to make a very important clarification: this article is written strictly from my personal experience. India is such a vast, diverse, and complex country that every traveler experiences a completely different reality. In my case, I didn’t travel alone; I was accompanied by my mom and my son, and we had the support of a local guide at all times, which made the logistics much easier in a country that can be very overwhelming.
Experiencing this adventure this way made everything a thousand times more special, safer, and, of course, a lot of fun! If you’re thinking about taking the plunge and traveling to the other side of the world, here I’ll share our wild experiences and the key recommendations that will serve as a foundation for your trip.
People talk a lot about the monuments, but what really left a lasting impression on our hearts were the people. Indians are incredibly kind, curious, and cheerful. They’re always ready with a smile and eager to make you feel welcome. And that mix of cultures certainly gave us some unforgettable moments.
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m white—very white! Well, it turns out that in many parts of India, seeing someone with my skin tone isn’t common. At first, I thought it was a coincidence, but it soon became a regular part of the trip: wherever I went with my mom and my son, people would shyly approach us to ask me for a photo. I ended up posing with grandmothers in colorful saris and children. It was absolutely wonderful!
India is the country with the second-largest number of English speakers in the world, but the local accent (often called Hinglish) has such a distinctive intonation and pace that it becomes quite a challenge. There were times when people spoke to us with great emotion, and I would go completely blank, trying to process what they had just said.
In those moments, I’d discreetly turn to my mom and my son and whisper, “Did you guys understand any of that?” They’d look at me with the same bewildered expression, and the three of us would end up trying not to laugh. Far from being frustrating, those language mix-ups became the inside joke of our trip and one of the things we enjoyed the most. In the end, with gestures, smiles, and goodwill, we always managed to understand each other!
Our itinerary was full of magical moments, but there are three that stand out above the rest:
To help you enjoy India as much as we do, take note of these practical tips:
A thousand times yes! India is intense. It challenges you and can be exhausting at times, but it more than makes up for it with the warmth of its people, its mysticism, and its breathtaking landscapes. Traveling with my mom and my son showed us that when you go with an open mind, willing to laugh off language misunderstandings and let the locals win you over, you’ll come home with a suitcase full of the most beautiful memories of your life.
Namaste and have a great trip!
